Si on se demande encore quels films sélectionnés à Cannes 2022 seront susceptibles de choquer le public cette année, Les Crimes du futur de Cronenberg étant bien partie pour provoquer l'aversion et Novembre de Cédric Jimenez pour être le nouveau scandale politique, l'année dernière, c'est évidemment Titane de Julia Ducournau qui a créé une énorme polémique après avoir causé quelques malaises, poussé plusieurs spectateurs à sortir de la salle de projection et remporté la Palme d'or. Mais le film est loin d'être le premier a avoir choqué le public cannois, loin de là. Si Lars von Trier et son Antichrist ont fait scandale à cause des scènes très violentes, notamment de mutilation, et que Gaspar Noé est peut-être devenu, avec Irréversible, le cinéaste français le plus controversé, Abdellatif Kechiche a dernièrement été le sujet de nombreux débats, surtout depuis Mektoub My Love Intermezzo et sa séquence de cunnilingus de treize minutes. Depuis La Vie d'Adèle, Kechiche et scandale vont de pair Le cinéaste n'a pas attendu le premier volet de la trilogie Mektoub pour créer une polémique. En effet, à sa sortie en 2013, La Vie d'Adèle et ses scènes de sexe très crues font scandale, mais le film réussit tout de même à comptabiliser plus d'un million d'entrées en France, après avoir reçu la Palme d'or à Cannes, exceptionnellement décernée au réalisateur et à ses deux actrices, Adèle Exarchopoulos et Léa Seydoux, récemment revenue sur les scènes de sexe traumatisantes du film. Quatre ans après le scandale de La Vie d'Adèle, qui lui a quand même valu une sale réputation, Abdellatif Kechiche est revenu à la charge avec Mektoub My Love, qui n'a pas été montré à Cannes, mais qui a été très critiqué pour l'obsession des corps féminins dont semble être victime le cinéaste. Pour le deuxième volet, Kechiche n'a pas refréné ses passions puisqu'il a proposé un film de 3h30, ce qui révoltait déjà certains, avec des scènes de sexe non simulées qui ont choqué le public, cannois cette fois-ci. Un film éprouvant pour ses acteurs, enfin surtout ses actrices Un second volet qui n'a pas échappé au scandale et qui a même fait pire, à tel point que l'actrice Ophélie Bau a quitté la salle pendant la première du film au Festival de Cannes en 2019, notamment à cause de la scène de cunnilingus que Kechiche aurait laissé au montage sans son accord final. Si le premier film avait réussi à sortir au cinéma, le deuxième, trois ans après sa première projection, n'est donc toujours pas sorti sur grand écran. Le Parisien s'est justement intéressé aux raisons qui pourraient expliquer l'absence des salles de Mektoub My Love Intermezzo. D'après leur enquête, la première raison concerne les musiques présentes dans le film. En effet, Kechiche et le studio n'auraient tout simplement pas les droits de la majorité des chansons utilisées dans le film qui se déroule presque entièrement dans une boîte de nuit. Obtenir ces droits couterait une somme faramineuse. Deuxièmement, à cause de sa longue scène de cunnilingus très controversée, il est fort probable que Mektoub My Love Intermezzo écope également d'une interdiction aux moins de 18 ans, ce qui ne rendrait pas sa sortie en salles impossible, mais très compliquée, réduisant considérablement le nombre possible de spectateurs. Mektoub My Love Intermezzo devrait donc sûrement dire adieu aussi à cette séquence, qui pourrait bien être le seul élément promotionnel du film, pour espérer débarquer en salles. Un deuxième volet très olé olé Cerise sur le gâteau, la société de production de Kechiche, Quat'sous Films, a fait l'objet d'une liquidation judiciaire, ce qui éloigne encore plus la possibilité de voir un jour ce deuxième film en salles. Partiellement tourné, le troisième volet, Mektoub My Love Canto Due pourrait subir le même sort. Selon Le Parisien, le film serait, sur le papier, plus fédérateur qu'Intermezzo puisqu'il ne se déroule pas dans une boîte de nuit. Cependant, comme le précise la journaliste auteur du papier, Catherine Balle, "on voit mal le réalisateur, connu pour son perfectionnisme et son intransigeance, accepter que la fin de sa trilogie sorte en salles alors que seules quelques dizaines de spectateurs cannois en ont vu le deuxième volet". Bref, Kechiche semble être plutôt mal barré, et ses projets, passés et futurs, aussi.
